Semrush vs Ahrefs vs DataForSEO: which SEO MCP fits your work?
All three bring SEO data into your assistant. They differ on what you need to already own, how they charge per question, and how much the assistant has to figure out for itself.

The verdict
Use the one that matches a subscription you already have. If you have neither Semrush nor Ahrefs, DataForSEO’s pay-as-you-go model is the cheapest way to start, and Dance’s Digital Marketing + SEO connector is free to start if what you want is a recommendation rather than data.

Semrush: the easiest if you already pay
Semrush’s server covers its SEO API, Trends API (with a Trends subscription) and read methods of the Projects API. Semrush One Starter, Pro+, SEO Classic Pro and Guru include 50,000 API units; Business and Advanced need a unit package. It is read-only, and its documented assistant list is the longest of the three. Full profile.
Ahrefs: the widest scope
Ahrefs’ hosted server spans Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Brand Radar, Web Analytics and Search Console data. Because that’s a lot of tools, Ahrefs lets you pick groups with a URL parameter, or use a curated “essentials” set. It needs Lite or higher and uses API units with a per-request minimum. Note that its older local npm package is archived. Full profile.
DataForSEO: metered and flexible
DataForSEO takes a different approach: four tools that let the assistant search the API documentation and then make any request. That reaches everything DataForSEO sells, and it puts more weight on the assistant choosing the right endpoint. Set a budget limit in your account first. Full profile.
When none of these is the right tool
If you run one small-business site and the real question is “what should I change?”, a data server gives you the inputs and leaves the judgment to you. Dance’s Digital Marketing + SEO is built for that question and ends in a drafted page change. If you need deep link or keyword databases across many domains, it is not a substitute.
